Drug intelligence / Profile preview
A combination therapy approach involving metformin as an add-on to entecavir treatment for chronic hepatitis B (CHB) infection. This combination was studied to potentially accelerate hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) clearance, which would indicate functional cure of CHB. Metformin was hypothesized to have antiviral and immunomodulatory effects that could complement entecavir's action. However, clinical trials showed that while safe, metformin add-on therapy did not significantly accelerate HBsAg clearance compared to entecavir alone.
