metformin + esomeprazole

Metformin + Esomeprazole is a combination therapy being investigated by Christiana Care Health Services for the treatment of preterm preeclampsia. Metformin, a biguanide typically used for type 2 diabetes, and esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor, are hypothesized to work additively to reduce the secretion of antiangiogenic factors such as soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1) and soluble endoglin (sEng). These factors are key drivers of endothelial dysfunction and the clinical manifestations of preeclampsia. By lowering these harmful serum markers, the treatment aims to prolong pregnancy and improve maternal and fetal outcomes in women undergoing expectant management for preterm preeclampsia between 24 and 32 weeks of gestation. The combination is currently being evaluated in a Phase 4 clinical trial.
