Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This investigational therapeutic is a local drug delivery system consisting of a nanoparticle-loaded gel containing metformin and melatonin. Developed by Amira Ragab at Mansoura University, it is designed as an adjunct to scaling and root planning (SRP) for the treatment of periodontal intra-bony defects. Metformin, traditionally an antidiabetic agent, is utilized here for its anti-inflammatory and bone-preserving properties, while melatonin serves as an antioxidant and osteogenic agent. The nanoparticle formulation facilitates the sustained release of these active ingredients directly into the periodontal pocket to promote bone regeneration and reduce inflammation. It is currently being evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT05906563) conducted at the Mansoura University Faculty of Dentistry.
