Overview

Metformin + myoinositol is a fixed-dose combination of two agents used primarily for the management of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in women of reproductive age. Metformin is an oral antihyperglycemic agent that improves insulin sensitivity by decreasing hepatic glucose production and increasing peripheral glucose uptake. Myoinositol, a naturally occurring carbocyclic sugar, acts as an insulin sensitizer and plays a role in cellular signaling pathways involved in ovarian function. The combination targets the underlying insulin resistance seen in PCOS, leading to improved menstrual regularity, ovulation rates, and reduction of hyperandrogenic symptoms such as acne and hirsutism. Clinical studies have shown that this combination is superior to metformin monotherapy for improving insulin resistance (as measured by HOMA-IR), menstrual irregularities, and quality of life in women with PCOS[1][5][6]. It may also potentiate the prolactin-lowering effect of metformin[2]. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal disturbances including nausea, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, flatulence, and taste changes[1][7].
