Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Metformin 1% gel is a locally delivered pharmaceutical formulation of the biguanide metformin hydrochloride, specifically investigated for the treatment of periodontitis. While traditionally used systemically for type 2 diabetes, this topical formulation is designed for subgingival application into periodontal pockets. It functions by activating AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which modulates the inflammatory response and promotes bone-supportive effects by stimulating osteoblast differentiation and inhibiting bone resorption. Developed and studied by researchers at Kafrelsheikh University, the gel typically utilizes a gellan-gum base to ensure sustained release of the active ingredient as an adjunct to conventional non-surgical treatments like scaling and root planing (SRP).
