Overview

This investigational combination therapy consists of a 1% metformin gel and Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF), developed by Al-Azhar University. It is specifically designed for horizontal ridge augmentation in patients with alveolar bone width deficiency (horizontal ridge deficiency), typically used in conjunction with the split-crest technique for dental implant placement. Metformin, a biguanide traditionally used as an antihyperglycemic agent, is utilized here for its local osteogenic effects, which include promoting osteoblast differentiation and reducing osteoclast activity. The gel is formulated using a 'Cold technique' with Pluronic F-127 and Carbopol 934 as excipients to facilitate local delivery and sustained release within the surgical site. PRF serves as a bioactive scaffold that provides growth factors to further support bone regeneration.
