Overview

Methamidophos is a highly toxic organophosphate insecticide and acaricide used to control a variety of horticultural and agricultural pests, including aphids and flea beetles. It acts as a potent acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, disrupting nerve function in insects (and humans) by preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine at synaptic junctions. Methamidophos is rapidly absorbed through the stomach, lungs, and skin in humans and is primarily eliminated via urine. Due to its high acute toxicity (classified as WHO Toxicity Class 1b), its use has been phased out or banned in many countries[2][4][7]. The compound is also known for causing severe cholinergic symptoms upon exposure due to its mechanism of action[1][5]. Its parent chemical is acephate.
