**Methandienone** is a synthetic androgen and anabolic steroid (AAS), originally developed by CIBA in 1955, and marketed under the brand name Dianabol. It is primarily used non-medically for physique and performance enhancement, especially by bodybuilders and athletes, due to its potent anabolic properties. Methandienone functions mainly as a strong agonist of the androgen receptor, promoting enhanced protein synthesis, nitrogen retention, and glycogenolysis in muscle tissue. This leads to rapid increases in muscle mass and strength, as well as accelerated recovery. It also has moderate androgenic and estrogenic effects, including the development of male secondary sexual characteristics and estrogen-related side effects such as gynecomastia and fluid retention. Methandienone is orally active and its use may result in hepatotoxicity.
