Methanobactin (HY-106) is a small molecule, copper-selective chelator being developed by Hyloris Developments. Originally identified as a "chalkophore" produced by methanotrophic bacteria (such as *Methylosinus trichosporium* OB3b) to acquire copper, it is being repurposed as a therapeutic agent for disorders of metal metabolism. The drug is currently in preclinical development for the treatment of Wilson's disease, cholestatic liver fibrosis, and iron overload. Its exceptionally high affinity and selectivity for copper allow it to mobilize and remove toxic copper deposits from the liver and other tissues, potentially offering a more potent and rapid-acting alternative to traditional chelators like D-penicillamine or trientine.
