Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Methanolic extract of Azadirachta indica (MEAI), derived from the neem tree, is a complex botanical extract containing bioactive limonoids (such as nimbin and nimbolide), flavonoids, and tannins. It possesses significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, primarily through the inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) production. In preclinical models, MEAI has demonstrated efficacy in treating sepsis by mitigating lethal endotoxemia and has shown antidepressant-like activity, likely mediated by the modulation of the central monoaminergic system and neuroprotective antioxidant pathways. Additionally, the extract exhibits antineoplastic effects by inducing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in various cancer cell lines, including cervical cancer. It is also investigated for its antiparasitic activity against Trypanosoma species.
