Overview

Methazolamide is a small molecule pharmaceutical drug classified as a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. It is primarily used to treat various forms of glaucoma, including open-angle and acute angle-closure glaucoma, by reducing elevated intraocular pressure. Methazolamide achieves this effect by inhibiting the enzyme carbonic anhydrase in the ciliary processes of the eye, which decreases aqueous humor secretion through reduced formation of bicarbonate ions and subsequent reduction in sodium and fluid transport. In addition to its ophthalmic uses, methazolamide has weak diuretic properties and may be used for edema associated with congestive heart failure. It has also been used off-label for certain types of seizures and for prevention or treatment of altitude sickness[2][4][5].
