Overview

Methcathinone is a synthetic stimulant drug and a structural analogue of methamphetamine and cathinone. It is classified as a synthetic cathinone and is often clandestinely manufactured from readily available chemicals[1][2][3]. Methcathinone acts as a potent central nervous system stimulant with effects similar to amphetamines and cocaine. Its primary mechanism involves inhibition of monoamine reuptake (dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin) by acting as a substrate for their respective transporters[5][6]. This leads to increased synaptic concentrations of these neurotransmitters. Methcathinone produces euphoria, increased alertness and energy, appetite suppression, enhanced empathy and sociability; adverse effects include hypertension, tachycardia, bruxism (jaw clenching), insomnia or binge use patterns followed by depression or sleep[2][5]. Chronic high-dose use can result in acute mental confusion or psychosis that typically resolves after cessation. The drug has no approved medical uses; it is primarily encountered as an illicit recreational substance.
