Methionine phosphonate is a synthetic small molecule analog of the amino acid methionine in which the carboxylic acid group is replaced by a phosphonic acid moiety. It belongs to the class of organic compounds known as organic phosphonic acids. Methionine phosphonate has been studied primarily as an experimental compound and is not approved for clinical use. Its structure mimics that of methionine but with altered physicochemical properties due to the presence of the phosphonate group. There are no known approved therapeutic indications or established mechanisms of action for this compound in humans or animals[1][8]. It has been used experimentally as a transition-state analog inhibitor in studies on enzymes such as methionine aminopeptidase[7].
