Overview

Methocarbamol is a centrally acting skeletal muscle relaxant used to relieve discomfort associated with acute musculoskeletal conditions such as muscle pain or injury. It is often prescribed alongside rest and physical therapy. The precise mechanism of action is not fully understood but is believed to involve central nervous system depression by blocking nerve impulses or pain sensations sent to the brain. Methocarbamol may also block spinal polysynaptic reflexes and decrease nerve transmission in spinal and supraspinal pathways. It does not act directly on skeletal muscle fibers or motor end plates. Methocarbamol can be administered orally or by injection; the injectable form may also be used in the management of tetanus (lockjaw)[1][2][3][4][5][8].
