Methopterin is a synthetic folic acid derivative and a structural analog of folic acid. It is classified as an investigational small molecule with effects on osteoclasts. Methopterin inhibits the proliferation and activation of osteoclasts and induces their apoptosis. This action likely contributes to its ability to inhibit inflammatory bone destruction[1][2][4]. It has been studied in the context of bone resorption disorders and has completed Phase 2 clinical trials for hematologic malignancies such as acute biphenotypic leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome with excess blasts[3]. Chemically it is also known as N10-methylfolic acid or alpha-Methopterin.
