Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Methotrexate nanoparticles are an investigational drug delivery system being developed by Azidus Brasil in collaboration with the University of São Paulo and other Brazilian clinical centers. This formulation utilizes nanotechnology to encapsulate methotrexate, a well-established folate antagonist and immunosuppressant, within lipid-core nanoparticles (LDE). The primary objective of this repurposing strategy is to treat severe COVID-19 patients suffering from Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). By utilizing nanoparticle delivery, the therapy aims to target the drug more effectively to inflamed lung tissues and modulate the hyper-inflammatory response, or cytokine storm, that drives acute lung injury and clinical deterioration in severe viral pneumonia. The formulation is currently being evaluated in Phase I/II clinical trials to determine safety and efficacy across ascending dose levels.
