Overview

Methoxetamine (MXE) is a dissociative anesthetic and a derivative of arylcyclohexylamine, structurally related to ketamine and 3-MeO-PCP. It primarily functions as a non-competitive antagonist at the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor and also exhibits activity as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor. Originally synthesized as a research chemical or designer drug, it gained popularity in the early 2010s as a recreational substance due to its hallucinogenic and dissociative effects. Unlike ketamine, methoxetamine was designed to have a longer duration of action and was hypothesized to have lower urotoxicity, though this has not been clinically proven. It is not approved for any medical use and is classified as a controlled substance in numerous countries. Note: In certain clinical contexts, particularly in translations from Chinese regarding respiratory treatments, the name methoxetamine may appear as an erroneous translation for the bronchodilator methoxyphenamine.
