Methoxy polyethylene glycol-epoetin beta, marketed under the brand name Mircera, is a long-acting erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) developed by Roche. It is a continuous erythropoietin receptor activator (CERA) produced by the chemical modification of recombinant epoetin beta with a methoxy polyethylene glycol polymer (PEGylation). This modification results in a significantly longer half-life compared to traditional erythropoietins, allowing for less frequent dosing (once every two to four weeks). The drug works by binding to and activating the erythropoietin receptor on erythroid progenitor cells in the bone marrow, thereby stimulating red blood cell production. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of anemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in both dialysis and non-dialysis adult patients.
