Methoxychlor is a synthetic organochlorine compound formerly used as an insecticide to control flies, mosquitoes, cockroaches, chiggers, and other pests on agricultural crops, livestock, stored grains, homes, gardens, lakes, and marshes. It was also used in veterinary medicine as an ectoparasiticide to kill external parasites on animals. Methoxychlor acts primarily by disrupting the nervous system of insects. All pesticide uses of methoxychlor were suspended in 2000 in the United States due to concerns about toxicity and environmental persistence; all products were expected to be voluntarily canceled by 2004[3][4][7]. Methoxychlor can cause reproductive toxicity and damage organs such as the liver and kidneys at high exposures[1][5]. It is not considered carcinogenic based on available evidence[5].
