Overview

Methyl bacteriopurpurinimide is a synthetic, brain-penetrant analog of the natural product bacteriochlorin. It functions as a photosensitizer with potential applications in both tumor imaging and photodynamic therapy (PDT). After administration, it crosses the blood-brain barrier and accumulates in tumor cells. Upon exposure to near-infrared (NIR) light, it enables fluorescence-based visualization of tumors for imaging purposes and can induce cytotoxicity in tumor cells during NIR-mediated PDT. This dual action makes it a candidate for fluorescence-guided surgery and targeted antineoplastic therapy[6].
