Methyl-d9-choline is an isotopically labeled analogue of choline in which all nine hydrogen atoms of the three methyl groups are replaced by deuterium. It is primarily used as a tracer in metabolic studies and clinical research to investigate choline metabolism and related pathways. Methyl-d9-choline has been investigated in early-phase clinical trials for its use as a tracer to study endoplasmic reticulum stress in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). As a small molecule analog of endogenous choline, it participates in similar biochemical pathways but can be distinguished analytically due to its deuterium labeling[1][7][10].
