Overview

Methyl salicylate is a small molecule topical analgesic and counter-irritant primarily used for the symptomatic relief of minor musculoskeletal pain such as that associated with arthritis, backache, sprains, strains, bruises, and neuralgia. It is commonly found in over-the-counter creams and patches. Methyl salicylate acts by causing irritation of the skin (rubefacient effect), which leads to vasodilation and a sensation of warmth that distracts from deeper musculoskeletal pain. Mechanistically it penetrates the skin to reversibly inhibit cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX), thereby reducing local production of inflammatory mediators like prostaglandins and thromboxane A2. It is structurally related to aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) but used topically rather than systemically[1][4][5][9].
