Overview

Methyl salicylate 2-ethylbutyrate is an ester derivative of salicylic acid, produced by the esterification of salicylic acid with methanol and 2-ethylbutyric acid. It is used in cosmetics for its wintergreen fragrance and as a flavoring agent in foods, beverages, candies, chewing gums, and oral care products. In pharmaceuticals, it serves as an active ingredient in topical anesthetics to promote relief of muscle and arthritis pain. Its mechanism of action is similar to other topical counterirritants; it acts primarily by causing irritation of sensory nerve endings which alters or masks musculoskeletal pain through counter-irritation. When applied topically, it may also reversibly inhibit cyclooxygenase enzyme locally to reduce the production of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins[1][3][4][5].
