Overview

Methyl salicylate and l-menthol transdermal patch (FS-67) is an over-the-counter topical analgesic product developed by Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical. It is marketed under the brand names Salonpas Pain Relief Patch and Salonpas Arthritis Pain. The patch contains methyl salicylate (10%) and l-menthol (3%) as active ingredients. Its mechanism of action involves local counterirritation to relieve mild to moderate aches and pains of muscles and joints associated with arthritis, sprains, bruises, or simple backache. The product was the first FDA-approved OTC topical analgesic patch in its category in the United States. Clinical studies have shown it to be safe for adults; however, efficacy was not demonstrated in pediatric populations aged 13–17 years for ankle sprain pain relief[1][2][6][8].
