Methylated spirit is a clear, colorless liquid consisting primarily of ethanol that has been rendered undrinkable by the addition of various chemical denaturants. The most common additive is methanol (typically at least 10%), but other substances such as pyridine, isopropyl alcohol, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, and bitrex may also be included depending on regional regulations and intended use[1][2][3][10]. These additives make the solution toxic and unpalatable to prevent recreational consumption. Methylated spirit is highly flammable and volatile; it burns with a pale blue flame and evaporates quickly[4]. It acts as an effective solvent for cleaning hard surfaces (glass, metal), dissolving stains (glue, wax), sterilizing medical equipment due to its antibacterial properties[3][4], serving as fuel for burners or camping stoves[1][2], preserving laboratory specimens or cosmetics[4], and even acting as an insecticide. The mechanism of action in disinfection relies on protein denaturation in microorganisms via ethanol’s dehydrating effect.
