Methylazoxymethanol acetate (MAM) is a synthetic azoxy compound and neurotoxin that inhibits DNA synthesis and selectively targets rapidly proliferating neuroblasts in the central nervous system. It is primarily used in research to create animal models of neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders, especially schizophrenia and epilepsy, by prenatal administration in rodents, which results in brain structural and behavioral deficits analogous to features of those diseases. MAM acts as a potent alkylating agent, which underlies its genotoxic and neurotoxic properties. It is considered a suspected carcinogen, and is not used as a pharmaceutical.[1][4][5][6][7][9]
