methylbenactyzium

Methylbenactyzium is a quaternary ammonium derivative of the anticholinergic drug benactyzine. As a muscarinic antagonist, it acts by competitively inhibiting the action of acetylcholine at muscarinic receptors. Unlike its parent compound, the quaternary structure of methylbenactyzium limits its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, resulting in predominantly peripheral effects. It has been historically utilized as an antispasmodic agent for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, such as peptic ulcers and gastritis, to reduce gastric secretion and motility. While it was once a common component in various gastrointestinal formulations, its clinical use has largely been superseded by more selective agents.
