Overview

Methylcantharidimide is an orally bioavailable derivative of the terpenoid cantharidin—a natural toxin extracted from blister beetles. It is under investigation for its potential antineoplastic (anticancer) activity. The compound may exert a direct tumor cell killing effect in susceptible tumor cells when administered orally. The precise mechanism of action has not been fully elucidated but is believed to be related to its structural similarity to cantharidin and possible inhibition of protein phosphatases involved in cell cycle regulation and apoptosis. Methylcantharidimide is being studied in clinical trials for the treatment of large and unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma[1][3].
