Methylcellulose is a semi-synthetic, hydrophilic derivative of cellulose used primarily as a bulk-forming laxative and an ophthalmic lubricant. When ingested, it absorbs water in the intestinal tract to increase stool bulk and moisture, thereby stimulating peristalsis and treating constipation. In ophthalmology, it is used in eye drops to relieve dry eye symptoms and as a viscoelastic agent during certain ocular procedures. Beyond its therapeutic uses, methylcellulose is widely employed as a thickening agent and emulsifier in the food and cosmetic industries, and as a vehicle for drug administration in preclinical research. In experimental ophthalmology, intraocular injection of methylcellulose is a standard method for inducing chronic ocular hypertension in animal models to study glaucoma.
