Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Methylconalamin for Injection (also known as WP-205) is a novel injectable formulation of mecobalamin (methylcobalamin), a biologically active form of vitamin B12, being developed by Wanbangde Pharmaceutical Group. Mecobalamin acts as a coenzyme for methionine synthase (5-methyltetrahydrofolate-homocysteine methyltransferase), facilitating the conversion of homocysteine to methionine, which is essential for maintaining the methylation cycle and reducing homocysteine-induced neurotoxicity. It also promotes axonal transport, axonal regeneration, and myelination, exhibiting neuroprotective and neuroregenerative properties. Wanbangde is developing this formulation for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and vitamin B12 deficiency. The drug has received Orphan Drug designation from the US FDA for the treatment of ALS and is undergoing Phase I clinical evaluation.
