Overview

Methylecgonine is a tropane alkaloid and the methyl ester derivative of ecgonine. It is found naturally in coca leaves and serves as a metabolite of cocaine in humans and other organisms. Methylecgonine can also be used as a precursor in the biosynthesis of cocaine within plants such as Erythroxylum coca (the coca plant). In animal studies, methylecgonine has shown potential cognitive benefits and some protective effects against cocaine toxicity; it inhibits sodium channels only at very high concentrations. Methylecgonine itself does not have established pharmaceutical uses or approvals but is studied primarily for its role in cocaine metabolism and plant biochemistry[1][2][3][7][9].
