Overview

Methylene blue + chlorhexidine gluconate is a combination of two active compounds commonly formulated as a mouthwash, oral rinse, cutaneous solution, or antimicrobial preparation. Methylene blue is a synthetic phenothiazinium dye with antiseptic, bacteriostatic, and broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties, often used for its redox activity and as a photosensitizer in photodynamic therapy, exhibiting antibacterial effects both with and without light activation. Chlorhexidine gluconate is a bisbiguanide antiseptic recognized as the gold standard in oral antimicrobial agents, acting as a broad-spectrum agent effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria by disrupting microbial cell membranes. The combination is evaluated as an antiplaque, anti-gingivitis, and wound care agent, with evidence suggesting methylene blue contributes lower cytotoxicity compared to chlorhexidine alone. This combination is under investigation for clinical use in oral health (mouthwash, periodontology), surface and skin disinfection, and possibly for viral decontamination in the oral cavity.[1][3][5]
