Overview

Methylephedrine is a sympathomimetic amine and an ephedra alkaloid derivative used primarily as an antitussive (cough suppressant), bronchodilator, and nasal decongestant. It acts as both a direct and indirect adrenergic receptor agonist, stimulating alpha and beta adrenergic receptors to relieve cough, expand the bronchi by relaxing bronchial muscles, and reduce nasal congestion. Its pharmacological effects are similar to those of ephedrine, including central nervous system stimulation due to its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier. Methylephedrine is metabolized into ephedrine and norephedrine. It has been reported in over-the-counter cough and cold medications in several countries but is not legally available in the United States or European Union for these indications. The drug has potential for abuse due to its stimulant properties[1][3][4][7].
