Methylergometrine (also known as methylergonovine) is a semi-synthetic ergot alkaloid used primarily in obstetrics to prevent or treat postpartum hemorrhage and uterine atony. It acts as a potent uterotonic by directly stimulating the smooth muscle of the uterus, increasing tone, rate, and amplitude of contractions, thereby reducing blood loss after childbirth or abortion. It is also sometimes used for the prevention and acute treatment of migraine headaches. The drug can be administered orally, intramuscularly, or intravenously. At high doses it may produce psychedelic effects similar to LSD due to its structural similarity as an ergoline derivative[1][2][5]. Methylergometrine is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines[5].
