methylnicotinate

Methyl nicotinate is the methyl ester of nicotinic acid (niacin). It acts as a peripheral vasodilator when administered topically, leading to increased local blood flow by vasodilation of dermal capillaries, typically resulting in cutaneous erythema. Its pharmacological effects are thought to be mediated by the local release of prostaglandins, which relax vascular smooth muscle. Upon skin penetration, it is hydrolyzed to nicotinic acid and methanol. Main uses are as a rubefacient in over-the-counter topical analgesics for the relief of muscle and joint pain, and as a skin-conditioning agent in cosmetics. It is approved for use as an ingredient in external analgesic drug products and as a flavoring agent.
