Overview
Methylphenidate is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant primarily used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults and children and narcolepsy. It acts as a norepinephrine–dopamine reuptake inhibitor by blocking the dopamine transporter (DAT) and norepinephrine transporter (NET), thereby increasing concentrations of these neurotransmitters in the synaptic cleft. This leads to enhanced alertness and improved attention. Methylphenidate is available in various immediate-release and extended-release formulations under multiple brand names. Developed by CIBA (now part of Novartis).
