Overview

This is a combination of two psychoactive compounds, methylphenidate and nicotine. Methylphenidate is a central nervous system stimulant primarily used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. It acts as a norepinephrine–dopamine reuptake inhibitor (NDRI), increasing synaptic concentrations of dopamine and norepinephrine by blocking their respective transporters, thereby enhancing alertness, attention, and cognitive function[6]. Nicotine is an alkaloid found in tobacco that acts as an agonist at nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the brain, leading to increased neurotransmitter release (including dopamine), stimulation of the central nervous system, enhanced alertness, and potential for dependence[4]. The co-use or combination of methylphenidate with nicotine has been studied primarily in preclinical models and epidemiological research due to high rates of co-use among individuals with ADHD who smoke. Research indicates that these drugs interact behaviorally and neurochemically; for example, methylphenidate may increase smoking behavior or susceptibility to nicotine's effects[1][2][3][5]. There is no approved pharmaceutical product combining both agents; studies focus on their interaction rather than therapeutic use as a fixed-dose combination.
