Overview

Methylphenidate CD is an extended-release, central nervous system stimulant formulation of methylphenidate hydrochloride. It is indicated for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in pediatric patients aged 6 to 15 years and adults. The formulation contains both immediate-release (IR) and extended-release (ER) beads, with approximately 30% of the dose released immediately and 70% released gradually over several hours, providing a biphasic plasma concentration profile. Methylphenidate acts primarily by blocking the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine into presynaptic neurons and increasing their release into the extraneuronal space, thereby enhancing neurotransmitter activity in the brain[1][3][5]. The d-threo enantiomer is more pharmacologically active than the l-threo enantiomer[1][5]. Methylphenidate CD may help increase attention span while reducing impulsiveness and hyperactivity in patients with ADHD[1][2].
