Overview

Methylprednisolone is a synthetic corticosteroid and glucocorticoid that mimics the action of natural hormones produced by the adrenal glands. It acts primarily as an anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive agent by inhibiting the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation. Methylprednisolone is used to treat a wide range of conditions including various forms of arthritis, severe allergies, asthma, autoimmune diseases (such as lupus), skin disorders (such as psoriasis), blood disorders, endocrine disorders (like adrenocortical insufficiency), eye diseases, gastrointestinal diseases (such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease), respiratory conditions, certain cancers (including hematologic malignancies), and multiple sclerosis flare-ups. Its mechanism involves dampening inflammatory cytokine cascades, inhibiting T cell activation, reducing immune cell migration into tissues such as the central nervous system, promoting apoptosis of activated immune cells, and decreasing cytotoxic effects mediated by nitric oxide and tumor necrosis factor alpha[1][2][4][5][6].
