Methylprednisolone + hyaluronic acid is a combination therapeutic administered via intra-articular injection for the management of osteoarthritis, particularly of the knee. Methylprednisolone is a synthetic glucocorticoid that provides rapid anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects by acting as a glucocorticoid receptor agonist, thereby suppressing the production of inflammatory mediators. Hyaluronic acid (or sodium hyaluronate) is a high-molecular-weight glycosaminoglycan that acts as a viscosupplement, restoring the rheological properties of synovial fluid to provide lubrication and shock absorption within the joint space. Additionally, hyaluronic acid interacts with cell surface receptors such as CD44 to modulate chondrocyte activity and further reduce inflammation. This dual-action approach aims to provide both immediate symptomatic relief from the steroid component and sustained functional improvement from the viscosupplementation component, often delaying the need for surgical intervention in patients who have failed conservative management.
