Overview
A combination therapy consisting of the corticosteroid methylprednisolone and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), specifically investigated by The Hospital for Sick Children for the treatment of pediatric immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). This regimen aims to rapidly increase platelet counts in emergency or severe bleeding situations by leveraging the synergistic effects of IVIG's immunomodulatory properties and methylprednisolone's potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive actions. In clinical trials (NCT00376077), the combination demonstrated a faster rise in platelet counts compared to IVIG monotherapy and was associated with a reduction in IVIG-related side effects such as headaches.
