This regimen consists of methylprednisolone (Solu-Medrol) administered intravenously during the anhepatic phase and tapered over the first five days post-transplant, followed by oral prednisone starting on day six. The prednisone is then gradually tapered and completely weaned off by six months post-operation. These glucocorticoids function by binding to the glucocorticoid receptor, thereby suppressing the immune response to prevent graft rejection. This standard-of-care arm was compared against a steroid-free regimen (basiliximab, tacrolimus, and mycophenolate sodium) to evaluate graft survival and the incidence of steroid-related complications such as hypertension, diabetes, and osteoporosis in adult primary liver transplant recipients.
