Methylprednisolone and Penicillamine combination

The combination of methylprednisolone and penicillamine is used in certain medical contexts, particularly for rheumatoid arthritis treatment. This combination brings together two distinct medications with different mechanisms of action. Methylprednisolone is a synthetic glucocorticoid with potent anti-inflammatory properties. It's used for various conditions including rheumatic disorders, collagen diseases, dermatologic conditions, allergic states, and many others. When administered as pulse therapy, it produces an immediate but temporary anti-inflammatory effect lasting for a maximum of four to eight weeks. Penicillamine functions as a chelating agent primarily used for removing excess copper in Wilson's disease. In rheumatoid arthritis, its mechanism is not fully understood, though it appears to suppress disease activity. It markedly lowers IgM rheumatoid factor without significantly depressing absolute levels of serum immunoglobulins and also interferes with the formation of cross-links between tropocollagen molecules and cleaves them when newly formed. The combination has been studied in rheumatoid arthritis treatment, with methylprednisolone causing a reduction in the number of fibroblasts and collagen fibers, and the combination affecting granulation tissue formation.
