Overview

Methylprednisolone sodium succinate is a synthetic glucocorticoid and the sodium succinate ester of methylprednisolone. It acts as a potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive agent by binding to the glucocorticoid receptor, modulating gene expression to suppress inflammatory responses and immune activity. Compared to prednisolone, it has greater anti-inflammatory potency with less tendency for fluid retention. It is used in a wide range of conditions including severe allergic reactions, asthma exacerbations, autoimmune diseases (such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis), certain cancers (as adjunct therapy), blood disorders, gastrointestinal diseases (like ulcerative colitis), endocrine disorders (such as adrenal insufficiency), dermatologic conditions (e.g., pemphigus), neurologic emergencies (e.g., multiple sclerosis exacerbations), and during cancer treatment for chemotherapy-induced nausea or prevention of medication reactions[2][4][6]. The drug is administered parenterally—either intravenously or intramuscularly—and demonstrates rapid onset of action[2][7].
