Methylselenocysteine is a naturally occurring organoselenium compound and an amino acid analogue of cysteine in which the sulfur atom is replaced by a selenium atom. It acts as an antioxidant when incorporated into glutathione peroxidase and has demonstrated potent chemopreventive activity in animal models[1][5]. Methylselenocysteine inhibits cell cycle progression and proliferation of premalignant mammary lesions, induces apoptosis in cancer cell lines, and offers selective protection against organ-specific toxicity induced by certain chemotherapeutic agents while enhancing antitumor activity[6][8]. It has been studied for its potential to prevent various cancers, including prostate carcinoma[3], and is found naturally in selenized yeast and some vegetables[5].
