Overview

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a naturally occurring organosulfur compound widely used as a dietary supplement for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It is the oxidized form of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). MSM is primarily investigated for its efficacy in reducing joint pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis, often in combination with glucosamine or chondroitin. Mechanistically, it has been shown to inhibit NF-kappa B activation and the NLRP3 inflammasome, thereby reducing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and TNF-alpha. Additionally, research suggests potential benefits in cardiometabolic health, exercise recovery, and metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) through the modulation of AMPK/mTOR signaling pathways.
