Overview

Meticrane is a small molecule diuretic of the sulphonamide class with thiazide-like activity. It acts by inhibiting the reabsorption of sodium and chloride ions in the distal convoluted tubule of the nephron in the kidney. This leads to increased excretion of sodium and water, resulting in a reduction in blood volume and lower blood pressure. It has been marketed primarily in Japan under brand names such as Arresten for the treatment of essential hypertension[1][2][4][5][9]. Its mechanism is similar to that of thiazide diuretics.
