Overview
Metipranolol is a non-selective beta-adrenergic antagonist (beta-blocker) used primarily in ophthalmic solution form to reduce elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It works by blocking both beta-1 and beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the eye, leading to decreased production of aqueous humor and thus lowering intraocular pressure. Metipranolol has little or no effect on pupil size or accommodation and lacks significant intrinsic sympathomimetic activity as well as membrane-stabilizing effects. The drug is rapidly metabolized into desacetylmetipranolol, an active metabolite[1][3][4][5][8].
