Metiram is a non-systemic, multi-site dithiocarbamate fungicide used in agriculture to control a broad spectrum of fungal diseases in crops such as grapes, potatoes, apples, and vegetables. It functions as a surface protectant by inhibiting fungal spore germination through the interference of various enzyme systems. Developed and marketed by BASF, metiram is frequently used in resistance management strategies due to its multi-site mode of action, which makes the development of fungal resistance less likely. However, recent regulatory reviews, notably by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), have identified metiram as an endocrine disruptor, leading to its non-approval or restricted use in certain jurisdictions. Its primary metabolite, ethylenethiourea (ETU), is a known toxicant associated with thyroid dysfunction and potential carcinogenicity.
