Overview

Metolazone is a thiazide-like diuretic (water pill) used to treat fluid retention (edema) and swelling caused by congestive heart failure, kidney disease (such as nephrotic syndrome), or other medical conditions. It is also prescribed alone or in combination with other medications to manage high blood pressure (hypertension). Metolazone works primarily by inhibiting sodium reabsorption at the cortical diluting site of the renal tubule and, to a lesser extent, in the proximal convoluted tubule. This leads to increased excretion of sodium and chloride ions, resulting in diuresis and reduced blood pressure. The antihypertensive effect is presumed to be related to its saluretic and diuretic properties[1][2][3][4][5].
